2014 TAQA GCC Hybrid Electric Challenge

A little more than a year ago we were approached to provide welding services for an exciting project being organized by NuGen Mobility  And global EEE.  The idea was to provide engineering students the opportunity to assemble, tune, and race hybrid electric “go-karts”. This race would not be for speed, it would instead be to see who could go the farthest on a given amount of fuel/energy. Our part at Fords Fabrications was applying our expertise to ensuring the motor mounts would preform flawlessly.  We TIG welded the CNC machined aluminum plates, and added a square tubing gusset to provide even more stability and stiffness to the motor mounts, adding to the efficiency by eliminating parasitic loss due to deflection.

However, the real story here is the student teams, and their hard work.  The competition at Al Forsan club in Abu Dhabi included 120 students from 11 teams. Team Gernas 114 (an all Woman team!) took home the champion title with an impressive score of 101 laps in the final race!  Please watch the excellent videos below, and read the linked articles for more info.  We were thrilled to be a part of this, and cannot wait to be a part of it again in 2015!
